Gurupurnima-July-19th (Tuesday)

“Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu Gururdevo Maheshwaraha…Guruhu sakshat Parambrahma tasmai Shri gurave namaha.”

It means that the Guru is Brahma, Vishnu and Shiv and through him God, or Parabrahma is present. This shlok shows the importance of a Guru in our lives. It is only through a Guru that we can reach God.

Vyas Purnima, which is commonly known as Guru Purnima falls on Full Moon Day is celebrated in respect to all Gurus. On Vyas Purnima, the shishya (student or devotee) offers pujan to the Guru. In Sanskrit, ‘Gu’ means darkness and ‘Ru’ is to remove the darkness. A Guru is one who removes the darkness from our life and gives us knowledge. A Guru teaches us the right path to reach God. Vyas Purnima is celebrated in worshipping Guru Ved Vyas. His parents were Parashar Rishi and Matsyagandha. Ved Vyas is remembered on this day because he had taken on the great task of actually classifying the Vedas. In ancient times, people passed on the Vedas from one generation to the next by word of mouth, but Ved Vyas collected them so that they could be read. He also wrote the Mahabharat and Shrimad Bhagwat. Since he provided the world with such great knowledge, he is known as the original Guru of Hindu Dharma.

The significance of this day is that the Guru holds the most essential position in one’s life and to give him respect and honor people celebrate Guru Purnima.

It is celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashadh (June to August) in reference to the Hindu calenar. This day is celebrated by the Buddhists in the honor of Lord Buddha who presented his first preaching on this very day at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh. The Hindus also celebrate this day in memory of the great sage Vyasa who is thought as the original guru of Hindu religion.

On Guru Purnima, we should remember and offer devotion to our beloved Guru, His Divine Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj. He is the only one that can teach us right from wrong and how to correctly live our lives. Pramukh Swami Maharaj gives us true knowledge and brings us out of darkness. For us, darkness comes in the form of television, eating out, going to the theatre and chatting, which take us further away from Maharaj. We should pray so that we are able to follow Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s commands by which we can earn his blessings.

Guru can be anyone… Parents/Friend/Wellwisher/Elder/God/ anyone whom you feels to listen their words in your Life.Offer your salutations to Guru and have their blessings.
